Biography
Located just off the coast of Morocco, Canary islands are rich with natural beauty and history. Because of their unique geographical situation, being separated from the mainland Spain, both islands and the city of Las Palmas (de facto capital of the region), managed to retain a certain degree of autonomy.
Mayor of Las Palmas Augusto Hidalgo Macario was born in 1972 in the city of Las Palmas. He was highly influenced by his father who was a prominent lawyer and politician.
He started his higher education at Jaime Balmes Colleague, where he developed his interests in politics. Later on, he enrolled in University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where he studied and graduated in Political Science and Sociology.
After he finished his academic development, Augusto Hidalgo Macario focused on his political career. His first steps were made during the formation of Student Union Canario. The first important position he obtained was the position of councilor, from 2007 to 2011, during the mandate of Mayor Jerónimo Saavedra. After this period he was still active in local politics, which enabled him to pursue his candidacy for the position of mayor in 2015. He won municipal the elections and was shortly after officially named mayor of Las Palmas.
His policies during his first term were primarily set on enhancement of economy and possible expansion of tourism. What makes him stand out from former holders of the position of mayor are his activities and support focused on LGBTQ collective.
Mayor of Las Palmas stated:"Forty-two years ago, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria saw the first street demonstrations defending the rights of LGTBIQ people. This was the beginning of a struggle for equality and recognition of all neighbours in this city who faced discrimination and persecution just for their sexual orientation".
This is a basis for his policies regarding protection and promotion of rights for this group. Many events, manifestations and other activities have been conducted through joint effort from both local administration and LGBTQ communities. This effort by Mayor Hidalgo Macario enables the development of tolerance culture in Las Palmas, which ensures continuous increase of equality in the city.
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia was highly supported by both the City Council and Mayor of Las Palmas. The tribute was organized in the Santa Catalina park, for all victims of misgendering.
The work done by the Equality and Diversity department of the City Council was also highly beneficial for raising awareness of local citizens regarding the LGBTIQ community. This department helped organize a number of "Pride" walks through the city over the years. It also implemented and introduced an educational project called "Diversity of Sexual Orientation and Identities", which will promote tolerance and detailed education for younger generations.
All of this work enabled Mayor Augusto Hidalgo Macario to win another election in 2019. He continued with his policies and support for LGBTQ community. This enables the city of Las Palmas to follow goals set by the European Commission, which were established as a framework in LGBTIQ Equality Strategy and is further improving the position of the city as LGBTIQ safe zone.
