José Hila

Biography

European islands mostly rely on income from tourism. However, the Covid-19 showed that the focus of these touristic centres also needs to be put on different aspects of the economy. Mayor of Palma José Hila, laid out his strategy regarding redevelopment of local economy. Born in the neighbourhood of Palma Son Gotleu in 1972, José Hila developed interest in the field of economy since early years. Growing up, he understood the importance of politics, especially when it comes to improving both the economy and living standards.  Because of these reasons, Hila started his political career. First important position he held was a member of the City Council of Palma, for which he was elected in 2007. In the same year, he was nominated deputy mayor. After his successes on these positions, he ran for the position of mayor in 2014 and won decisively. His economic policies present a big aspect of his strategy. Those enabled him to be re-elected as mayor in 2019. Mayor José Hila laid out his strategy for the city with the aim of redeveloping the economy. Two main aspects of this strategy are a continuous support of tourism and the growth of the city with regards to investments and employment.  Mayor Hila stated during an interview: "We are working to become a more diversified city so that the future of our young people is not merely limited to the tourist sector". His vision is to establish Palma as a city full of opportunities. In order to boost quality of life, investments in innovation districts are now present. One of these districts is Nou Levant. Besides promotion of innovation and research, this measure is also providing new workplaces. In order to promote this project, Mayor Hila also presented a plan to create pedestrian-friendly infrastructure with the goal of reducing pollution throughout the city. Furthermore, his focus on establishing a circular economy, through collaboration of public and private sector investments, proved highly beneficial. These investments are particularly supported by local administration because those promote city sustainability. With this set of goals, Mayor Hila enabled Palma to receive EU funds for infrastructure redevelopment. A big part of the funds will be allocated for the construction of 100 km of bike lanes, public bike stations and establishment of low-emission zones. All of these plans and programmes should result in Palma presenting itself as a business hub for the region. If these measures and ideas are completely implemented, it will promote the region of Balearic Islands even more and attract a great influx of tourists, but also entrepreneurs and companies.
