Luis Barcala
Biography
Luis Barcala is a Spanish politician, lawyer and the current mayor of Alicante.
He was born in 1962 in Alicante. During his childhood years, Luis Barcala was highly interested in athletics. In 1975, he won the Alicante provincial youth championship in two categories.
Despite his love for the athletics, Luis Barcala pursued his academic development. He obtained his his Master's degree in both Foreign Trade and High Specialisation in Banking Law. This led to his career as lawyer, but also enabled him to pursue his other interest, event organizing.
Because of his notable work in the People's Party, Luis Barcala was elected for the position of councilor of Alicante in 2011. He was re-elected for the same position in 2013, becoming councilor for Health and Environment. He held the position until 2015.
Luis Barcala became mayor of Alicante in 2018. Since his election, he introduced several important strategies for the city. Most of them focus on social and economic aspects, but also the quality of life, such as the introduction of a new cycling itinerary on Avenue de las Naciones.
In 2021, Mayor Barcala and the company Amazon announced the establishment of a new logistic center in Alicante, which provides a wide range of new job opportunities in the city.
Mayor of Alicante also implemented several waste management programs, like the introduction of waste containers suitable for people with reduced mobility, visually impaired and elderly.
The latest strategy presented by mayor Barcala is the establishment of a new infrastructure plan, which aims at achieving zero discharge of wastewater. The funding for this project came from EU funds and reached 100 million euro. This strategy will reduce pollution and make the environment of Alicante more sustainable. (photo credit: wikimedia)
