Biography
Grégory Doucet is a French politician who is serving as Mayor of Lyon since 2020. He was elected for the mayor’s office by the municipal council of Lyon on 4 July 2020, and by accomplishing that, he became the first member of his party to assume the office.
Mayor Doucet represents a new generation of green mayors in Lyon and he is a proud member of Europe Ecology, The Greens, which is a green political party in France that prioritizes and emphasizes environmental issues. Mayor of Lyon’s political party calls for a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions, phasing out nuclear energy in favor of renewable energy, the creation of 600,000 ‘green jobs’, eco-friendly urban planning, the development of sustainable agriculture, and a moratorium on the use of genetically modified organisms. Furthermore, he was appointed party secretary for Lyon in 2017 where he co-organized the Lyon Climate March.
When chosen to lead the EELV list in the 2020 municipal election, mayor of Lyon received an absolute majority of the vote with 52.4% in the second round.
He is also a councilor of Lyon Metropolis, where he takes part of the Committee on Finance, Institutions, Resources, and Territorial Organisation.
Before running for the municipal elections, Grégory Doucet was the geographical director for West Africa at Handicap International. In addition to that, the successful mayor of Lyon is also the proud vice-president and founder of the NGO Planète Enfant & Développement. It is an organization and a child protection association that responds to the urgent need to protect children in danger but also helps to educate, grow and integrate these young citizens.
Doucet is committed to promote local productions which take into account the question of animal welfare, fair remuneration for producers, low ecological impact, and respect for Earth.
Since he won the election in 2020, he had put “the climate emergency” on the agenda and he has been making many efforts for the city of Lyon with a vision for the city to become a climate-neutral city. One of his main concerns is the question of food and in particular agriculture, which has already taken a strong place in its municipal program.
Mayor of Lyon has an incredible goal of reaching 100% organic and 50% local food in the canteens by the end of the mandate which shows that he is a very ambitious mayor who wants to change the city of Lyon by making it greener and by creating a healthier environment for the citizens.
