Pierre Hurmic
Biography
Pierre Hurmic is a French politician who is serving as mayor of Bordeaux since 2020. Before becoming a mayor, he was first elected to the municipal council of Bordeaux in 1995. He is a green mayor of Bordeaux and cares a lot for the environment.
Pierre Hurmic is the mayor who is largely devoted to ecology, and since he has become the mayor of Bordeaux he is constantly calling for a climate emergency.
Bordeaux is the largest urban area ever to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city represents the world capital of wine and combines its heritage with a very bold approach as a city-wide open to innovation.
Like many cities around the world, Bordeaux has been facing increasing environmental challenges such as rising water levels, frequent heat waves, soil sealing and loss of biodiversity. These are some of the reasons why mayor of Bordeaux made climate challenge his top priority. As soon as he became the mayor, he has declared a climate emergency in the city of Bordeaux.
Hurmic is working on an agroecology project and wants to develop micro-farms and aquaponics in Bordeaux which will further accelerate the support for local agriculture. Mayor of Bordeaux is also moving towards banning cars in the city which will make Bordeaux much greener and less polluted.
He has also placed a new importance on the need for local and sustainable solutions in the city, for example, addressing food self-sufficiency and active mobility.
Mayor Hurmic has a strong belief that cities must become ecosystems again, with economic activity and agriculture in the focus. To move in this direction, he has created a project combining port activity, renewable energies and an urban farm that is under construction in the Bassins à Flot district, north of Bordeaux.
