Lyon has made its first donation of IT equipment to Emmaüs Connect city organisation as part of its green digitalisation project.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet stressed the importance of making IT equipment available to people who do not have computers.

Lyon noted that it refurbished some of its computer equipment and donated it to the city organisation to be sold at solidarity price.

The goal of the project is to reduce environmental impact of use of IT equipment by minimising waste and extending the lifespan of equipment as well as to make IT equipment more available.

It is aimed at helping people in need to acquire computers and gain access to online services while protecting the environment.

City authorities pointed out that approximately 800 kilograms of raw materials are needed to manufacture a computer weighing 2 kilograms, stressing that extending the lifespan of IT equipment lowers environmental impact.

Lyon noted that digital technology is ubiquitous and needed to participate in public life, stressing the importance of providing access to as many residents as possible.

The first donation of approximately 100 computers is to be followed by more donations over the next three years.

Emmaüs Connect pointed out that Lyon’s project sets an example and shows that ecology and social inclusion can go hand in hand.
