Utrecht announced that restoration of the Dom Tower will be completed ahead of schedule and within the budget of EUR 37.2 million.

Restoration of the Dom Tower started in 2019, before Mayor of Utrecht Sharon Dijksma took office, and was initially scheduled for completion in November 2024.

However, Utrecht authorities announced the work would be completed in the summer of 2024, several months ahead of schedule, and reiterated that cost of the project would remain within budget.

According to plans, the first scaffolding will be removed from the spire in January next year, which will free up the top 40 metres of the tower.

“It is fantastic that we will soon be able to see the Dom Tower in all its glory again,” noted Dennis de Vries, Utrecht alderman responsible for real estate.

“After all these years under construction, it will be the first time for many children, students and other newcomers in Utrecht that they can see the icon of the city,” he added.

De Vries concluded that he is happy the project will be completed ahead of schedule and within budget, which is not common for large and complex projects.

The temporary elevator for visitors will be removed in early January next year to allow the project to move forward, with city authorities stressing that guided tours will still be available.

According to Utrecht authorities, the Dom Tower will not need major maintenance in the next five decades.
