Nice’s ambitious revegetation plan boosts urban biodiversity

Nice reminded that it adopted an ambitious revegetation plan in 2019 and reaffirmed its commitment to implement it as part of ecological transition.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi pointed out that roughly 70,000 new trees have been planted since 2021 and added that a total of 280,000 will be planted by 2026.

Nice is to reach the target of one tree per resident by 2026 and is planning 70 new hectares of green areas to improve air quality, lower noise and reduce the heat island effect, among other.

Replacing paved surfaces with green areas will also help to manage runoff and lower particulate pollution, which has environmental and health benefits. Revegetation will have positive effects on biodiversity as new green areas will attract wildlife.

City authorities reminded that the Tree Charter provides guidelines for revegetation efforts in Nice and recommends different tree species for each part of the city depending on microclimatic factors.

As species best suited for the local climate, the Tree Charter lists Montpellier and field maple, Chinese mulberry, coral trees and Paulownias. The broad range of species will contribute to biodiversity and create environmental balance.

Nice concluded that revegetation efforts will create more peaceful spaces around the city, which will improve well-being of residents.
