Urban greening gains momentum in Nice with 70,000 new trees
Nice has planted nearly 70,000 trees since 2021 and has developed approximately 33 hectares of green areas since 2008.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi reminded that 16 new parks and gardens have been built in the last 15 years or so along with 7 community gardens and approximately 100 educational gardens.
According to Kermap satellite data analytics, Nice is the greenest city in France with more than 200,000 residents as trees cover 34% of its territory.
The city adopted an ambitious environmental plan in 2019 according to which it is to reach the target of one tree per resident by 2026 and develop additional 70 hectares of green areas.
City authorities stressed that making Nice greener will improve air quality, increase absorption of CO2 and fight against the heat island effect, among other.
The move will also reduce noise, make more room for pedestrians and provide opportunities for recreation and leisure, which will improve quality of life in the city.
Creating more green areas will help Nice to preserve biodiversity, with city authorities stressing the importance of planting trees adapted to the urban environment.
Nice concluded that it will remain focused on environmental projects in the coming years to reach climate targets and create more peaceful natural spaces in the city.
