Mayor Link is working on making Duisburg even more livable
Sören Link is the current mayor of Duisburg, one of the largest cities in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Link was first elected a mayor in 2012, and was later re-elected five years later. Prior to that, Sören Link served in the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament from May 2005 to 2012. His work was primarily concerned with educational policies.
As mayor of Duisburg, Link is committed to making this German city safer, greener, and more affordable. The City Council of Duisburg approved the budget for 2022 and 2023 in December 2021, which laid out the city’s expected spending and revenue in the upcoming period. The plan demonstrated the strong will of Duisburg to take on the leading role in the green transition and numerous other fields, under the inspiring leadership of mayor Link.
A wide range of measures is planned in the field of sustainable development and climate action. Duisburg will also rely on the regular participation of its residents to achieve these objectives. Citizens and businesses alike are given the opportunity to actively shape and improve their local communities. Furthermore, Duisburg also intends to become more bike-friendly in the coming years, which is why the city has made a commitment to drastically improve the conditions of the cycling infrastructure.
Amazing efforts Mayor Link makes in the field of environment protection are also visible in the port district of Ruhrort. There, Duisburg has joined forces with Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH (Haniel) to make the district the world’s first environmentally neutral quarter by 2029. Environmental neutrality encompasses topics other than the well-known climate neutrality, such as biodiversity preservation and soil and water protection. If this is achieved, it will dramatically improve the Ruhrort residents’ quality of life as well as the general economic and social conditions in the area. Furthermore, it would set an important example in the fight against climate change and put even more spotlight on Duisburg in this regard.
In addition to being dedicated to constantly improving the living conditions in Duisburg, mayor Link also makes sure the city’s reputation of a ‘’sports city’’ is maintained. The Ruhr Games, Europe’s largest youth sports festival, will be held in Duisburg in 2023. Duisburg previously hosted the 2019 edition of the event, which is said to have been one of the most successful since the event’s inception in 2015. (photo credit: wikimedia)
