Ruhr Games coming back to Duisburg for 2023 edition

News

The German city of Duisburg will host next year’s edition of Ruhr Games, Europe’s largest youth sports festival. Duisburg previously also hosted the 2019 edition of the event, which is said to be one of the most successful ones since the Games were launched back in 2015.

Mayor of Duisburg Sören Link stated on social media: I am looking forward to the Ruhr Games 2023 in Duisburg. The 2019 games were already really great with amazing competitions, impressive programme and a great audience in front of a unique backdrop in our Landschaftspark Duisburg.

I am confident that the new edition next year will be at least as good. Hopefully, many people will again be able to cheer on the athletes and celebrate, mayor Link further stated.

The Ruhr Games have been held every two years since their inception in 2015. The city of Essen hosted the inaugural edition of the event in 2015, after which Dortmund and Duisburg hosted the competition in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

The most recent edition of the event took place in Bochum last year. Due to the ongoing health coronavirus pandemic, the competition could not take place with the live audience. The event, which was held in a digital format for the first time, was equally successful.

More good news for Duisburg in the field of sports were also recently announced. In addition to hosting the Ruhr Games, the German city has also received a special title of a “host town” for next year’s Special Olympics World Games set to take place in Berlin.

The Special Olympics World Games are the world’s largest inclusive sports event during which athletes with intellectual disabilities compete in 26 different sports. The 16th edition of the event will be held in the German capital from June 17th to June 25th, 2023.

As one of the host towns, Duisburg will host foreign delegations who will be taking part at the Games and offer training facilities to participants. One of the highlights is said to be the torch run, during which the Olympic fire will be carried through Duisburg. (photo credit: Helge Tscharn)
