New plans for Duisburg: safer, greener and cheaper

The City Council of Duisburg has approved the budget for 2022 and 2023 which lays out the city’s expected spending and revenue over the next two years. This German city is aiming to become a safer, cleaner and greener place over the next two years.

Mayor of Duisburg Sören Link stated on social media: “Here you can see what the new budget brings concretely for the coming years in Duisburg: more staff for cleanliness, security and order. So that our city becomes even more livable and lovable”.

Many Duisburg residents prioritize security and order, which is why the city announced it would progressively boost the city’s field service (SAD) by a total of 28 new employees over the next two years. In addition, the municipal public order office’s operating hours will be extended at night and on weekends. The so-called “city patrol” will be established to ensure that SAD maintains a consistent presence in the inner city.

In the field of sustainable development and climate action, a wide range of measures are planned. To fulfill those goals, Duisburg will also rely on the engagement of its residents on a regular basis. Wirtschaftsbetriebe Duisburg is said to dramatically increase the amount of green maintenance it performs throughout the city. For both budget years, the businesses are to receive an additional 2.1 million euros in this field.

Green roofs, for example, will serve as green counterpoints to the city’s “concrete desert,” with public funding of 50,000 euros being utilized to make the city center more livable. Furthermore, citizens and businesses alike are given the opportunity to play an active role in shaping and improving their local areas.

Duisburg also plans to become more bike friendly over the next period. The city is committed to removing potholes and bumps on its cycle paths. A total of 500,000 euros will be used for this purpose in 2022, as well as additional 1.4 million euros in 2023.
