Bologna’s pilot project boosts education and social inclusion through longer school days

Bologna has launched a pilot project to keep schools open longer, noting that it is co-financed through EU funds.

Headed by Mayor of Bologna Matteo Lepore, city authorities pointed out that two schools usually open only in the morning have remained open through the afternoon to offer activities for children between 11 and 16 years of age.

As part of the pilot project, Bologna wants to build a network of schools that will remain open to provide a space for activities for adolescents ranging from assisted learning and preparation for tests to sports and arts workshops.

City authorities pointed out that pupils will have an opportunity to take part in outdoor activities and learn about environmental issues and sustainability.

The pilot project is part of Bologna’s broader efforts to improve education, with city authorities noting that a comprehensive plan for youth will be adopted after public consultation.

Bologna stressed that schools offer free activities for at least 45 pupils each through summer and winter, providing opportunities to learn, socialise and pursue their interests.

City authorities pointed out that the pilot project is an addition to projects launched last year to promote integrated teaching and increase participation of neighbourhoods and local communities.

Besides learning and socialising, pupils will have an opportunity to hone their skills and apply what they have learned to plan and implement concrete projects.
