Bologna launches IT equipment reuse project
Bologna has launched the Second Life project aimed at reuse of IT equipment that the municipality no longer needs.
Headed by Mayor of Bologna Matteo Lepore, city authorities pointed out that coronavirus measures prompted the city to move away from desktop computers and replace them with laptops to facilitate remote work.
Bologna pointed out that the project focuses on reuse of decommissioned but still functional equipment and reminded that municipalities have to replace equipment periodically.
According to plans, the Digital Innovation Sector is to examine decommissioned equipment and identify computers that are still in good condition, which are to be reused.
City authorities stressed that the Second Life project will help to reduce unnecessary waste, noting that the project will be beneficial from environmental, social and economic perspectives.
The project is to last four months, during which computers suitable for reuse will be formatted and redistributed to local associations and residents.
City authorities will monitor the project, organise storage and make sure that associations receive IT equipment in line with their needs.
As part of the project, the city will raise awareness about it among potential recipients and conduct regular surveys.
City authorities stressed that the project is not for profit, but will not include additional costs for the city.
