Duisburg offers shelters for homeless as winter draws near
Duisburg offered winter shelter to the homeless, warning that nighttime temperatures are dropping. City authorities headed by Lord Mayor of Duisburg Sören Link pointed out in November that emergency accommodation centres for women and men are open.
Alderman for Education, Labor and Social Affairs Astrid Neese stressed the importance of protecting homeless people from freezing winter temperatures.
“In Duisburg, everyone in need of help gets a place to sleep… the system guarantees this support regardless of weather conditions and season,” she reminded.
City authorities pointed out that pets are not allowed in emergency shelters for hygienic reasons and added that homeless people who do not want to stay in shelters can use the weather-protected subway station at Neudorfer Street.
Use of face masks is compulsory there if social distance cannot be maintained.
Diakoniewerk welfare organisation director Udo Horwat called on the residents to offer help to any homeless people they encounter. He pointed out that the organisation offers a wide range of services for the homeless to help them find a way out of homelessness.
Together against Cold charity head Bernhard Fastabend noted that the charity launched additional winter operations to provide homeless people with hot drinks, food, sleeping bags and personal care items.
He added that charity representatives discuss the issues that homeless people face on an individual basis and refer them to professional services.
