Zagreb is modernizing its waste management system
The waste management system in the Croatian capital Zagreb is undergoing a massive transformation. Recently, the city has also taken another important step towards digitizing its waste collection system.
Mayor of Zagreb Tomislav Tomasevic stated that the local waste management system was undergoing a ‘real change’. He is also certain that the transformation will be successful thanks to the joint effort of all Zagreb residents, but added that it won’t happen ‘overnight’.
Mayor Tomasevic stated on social media: ‘’We are happy that even before the introduction of the new waste collection system, you started to separate more, so the share of waste set aside for recycling is increasing, especially the plastics.’’
Zagreb will soon increase the frequency of plastic and metal collection, from once every two weeks to once a week. Furthermore, by the end of the year, the city will acquire 5,000 additional plastic waste containers in public spaces.
In addition, the Croatian city has also digitized the data required for infrastructure planning and the implementation of the new garbage collection system. Moreover, Zagreb is systematically recording all potential locations for underground containers in the area of the historical core of the city.
‘’We have approached this huge change systematically and responsibly, using modern technologies, in order for this change to succeed. It won’t go overnight, it hasn’t happened like this in other European cities either, but I’m sure we all want a tidier and cleaner city – as evidenced by the fact that the share of waste being separated increases even before the garbage bag collection system started, which makes us extremely happy,’’ Mayor of Zagreb Tomislav Tomasevic concluded.
