The German section of the international association of art critics AICA (Association Internationale des Critiques d‘Art) has named Stuttgart’s Kunstmuseum museum of the Year 2021, it was announced on the city’s official website.

Mayor of Stuttgart Frank Nopper stated on social media: ‘’The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart has been named “Museum of the Year 2021” by the German section of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA). I am very happy for our Kunstmuseum Stuttgart’!’

Kunstmuseum is one of Stuttgart’s most important landmarks located right at the heart of the city. The history of Stuttgart and the surrounding area is deeply woven into the content of the museum’s art collection. The museum’s exhibitions aim to stimulate reflection and a desire to rediscover our past and present in ever-changing ways.

Ulrike Groos has been the director of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart since 2010. Her main areas of interest are preserving the collection’s fundamental identity, giving the young emerging artists an opportunity to have their first exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum, and collaborating closely with private collectors. Notable research and digitization projects have also been launched under her leadership, it was stated on the Kunstmuseum’s website.

‘’For more than ten years, Ulrike Groos has done an outstandingly good job for our city as director. She has raised the profile of the Kunstmuseum with a strong exhibition programme and brought it into the ranks of internationally renowned municipal museums,’’ mayor Nopper continued.

‘’It was the right decision of my predecessor Wolfgang Schuster to build the building in such a central location on Schlossplatz, right in the heart of our city. The location of a museum is also decisive for its success,’’ mayor of Stuttgart Frank Nopper concluded.

The museum’s openness is also represented by its distinctive shape thanks to which it has become one of Stuttgart’s most recognizable and iconic landmarks over the years. (photo credit: Marcel Strauß/Unsplash)
