Stuttgart to start assessing environmental effects of its future resolutions

News

Stuttgart City Council headed by Mayor of Stuttgart Mark Nopper adopted the “climate check” resolution in November.

According to the decision, Stuttgart will assess environmental as well as economic effects of its decisions, with the city pointing out that the decision was passed by a large majority.

The city previously examined only economic and financial effects of its resolutions, noting that environmental effects will be added to the list in the future.

The purpose of the climate check is to assess greenhouse gas emissions associated with decisions and present the conclusions transparently.

According to city authorities, the move will raise awareness of environmental issues and help Stuttgart to do its part in climate change mitigation.

Stuttgart stressed that the decision is the first step in this direction, pointing out that city authorities will prepare additional measures and proposals next year to better assess the effects of planned projects on the environment.

Mayor for Urban Development Peter Pätzold pointed out “our actions have an impact on the climate and climate protection… it is therefore also necessary to check decisions from all areas of local politics for their climate relevance.”

He concluded that the plan will help Stuttgart to better assess the effects of its decisions on the environment and raise awareness about the importance of climate protection.
