Stuttgart enters climate partnership with Tunisian sister city Menzel Bourguiba
Stuttgart entered a climate partnership with its Tunisian sister city Menzel Bourguiba. Lord Mayor of Stuttgart Mark Nopper, his counterpart Selim Hragua and Tunisian Consul Mohsen Sebai inked the agreement in November to protect the environment and adapt to challenges brought on by climate change.
Nopper pointed out that “climate protection and climate change adaptation are highly topical issues for us because our two cities are affected by very different effects of climate change.”
Stuttgart authorities pointed out that the recently closed partnership is one of a dozen or so that were signed recently between German cities and their twin towns in Africa and Latin America.
Hragua lead a small delegation to Stuttgart to discuss technical details of the partnership and pointed out that cooperation started very productively.
The delegation visited a recycling centre, a waste incineration plant and a wastewater treatment plant as part of their stay in Stuttgart.
Speaking after the signing of the partnership agreement, Nopper pointed out “we got the opportunity to work together with our Tunisian friends to develop possible communal solutions to a global and increasingly urgent challenge.”
He thanked Menzel Bourguiba for joining forces with Stuttgart in the fight to protect the environment.
Stuttgart and Menzel Bourguiba have been sister cities since 1971. The two cities are to develop and action programme in the next two years, setting out goals, listing measures to be adopted and allocating funds for implementation.
