Stuttgart announced a package of measures aimed at strengthening the green push and achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. Under Mayor of Stuttgart Frank Nopper, the city decided to set aside EUR 250,000 per year for two programmes to expand green areas and speed up Stuttgart’s adaptation to the changing environment.

The city continues its “solar offensive” launched in 2020 as part of efforts to increase production of electricity from solar energy. The project is worth EUR 15 million, with city authorities pointing out that they already received 1,600 funding applications for installation of solar panels.

Stuttgart already approved 1,100 applications and pointed out that it received more than 900 applications for this year. It operates more than 200 solar panel systems on the roofs of public buildings and is planning to install solar panels on the roofs of all public buildings by 2025.

Subsidies for installing solar panels only are roughly 25% lower compared to subsidies for installing panels and planting greenery on rooftops.

Mayor for Urban Development Peter Pätzold stressed the importance lowering greenhouse gas emissions and speeding up the transition to renewables, pointing out that small measures can have a big impact.

“More greenery on buildings and in courtyards makes Stuttgart more liveable and resilient,” he noted and concluded that more green areas will improve air quality, offer wild animals a habitat and help the city to save more energy.
