Mayor of Stuttgart praises volunteers amid Ukraine humanitarian crisis
Mayor of Stuttgart Frank Nopper was part of the jury of the annual award “Stuttgarter of the Year”. Activist Serkan Eren, who is the founder of the civil aid organization ‘’STELP supporter on site’’, was recognized for his efforts to help the people of Ukraine following the Russian invasion. The award is organized by the newspaper Stuttgarter Zeitung and Volksbank Stuttgart.
Mayor Nopper stated on social media: Volunteers are priceless heroes of everyday life – especially in times of crisis they are indispensable! For me, it was an honor to be part of the jury and the award ceremony for the honorary award “Stuttgarter of the Year” of Stuttgarter Zeitung and Volksbank Stuttgart. Serkan Eren is one of the winners. He founded the aid organization STELP supporter on site and returned from an aid mission in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv shortly before the award ceremony.’’
The civil aid organization ‘’STELP supporter on site’’ has been very active since the beginning of the Russian invasion last month. It has opened collection points where all Stuttgart residents are able to donate clothes and other items for the Ukrainian people. Money is also being collected to help the people fleeing the war.
‘’Without the commitment of volunteers, without their dedication, hope, respect, and ambition, we would not be able to even begin to cope with the great challenges we are facing at the moment. That’s why I take my hat off to all those who volunteer and help make the world a better and more humane place,’’ mayor Nopper continued.
Over the weekend, 200 Ukrainian refugees were transferred from Stuttgart to housing in the districts of Böblingen and Schwäbisch Hall, it was announced on the city of Stuttgart’s webpage. Mayor Nopper thanked the two districts, as well as all the volunteers for their hard work.
“The large number of war refugees from Ukraine arriving at Stuttgart Central Station every day poses enormous challenges for us in terms of accommodation and care. That is why the relief provided by the districts is very important.
