Gothenburg is planning new parks in Masthuggskajen district to make the area greener and provide more opportunities for leisure and exercise.

Headed by Mayor of Gothenburg Jonas Attenius, city authorities noted that two new parks are planned – Masthuggsparken and Järnvågsparken.

Järnvågsparken will be built on the Göta Tunnel and will have nearly 8,000 square metres. It will boast a picnic area, a climbing wall, playgrounds and meeting areas as well as a variety of plant and animal life.

Project manager Johanna Axelsson noted “the park should be a green oasis,” pointing out that plants will be carefully selected to make the park beautiful throughout the year.

She added that the park will have an open green area for hosting events, stressing that it will bring environmental as well as social benefits to Gothenburg.

Masthuggsparken will be smaller – roughly 2,000 square metres – and will serve as a green meeting and leisure area.

It will boast playgrounds and a picnic area, and will have noise barriers to make the area more suitable for leisure activities.

Project manager Gunilla Gombrii pointed out that the park will serve as a buffer against flooding as it will be designed to be flooded temporarily and hold roughly 800 cubic metres of water.

She stressed the importance of making Gothenburg greener to create a healthier environment.
