City-resident collaboration creates green oasis in Gothenburg
Gothenburg has announced plans to open the Jubilee Park in June with a four-day celebration.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Gothenburg Axel Josefson invited residents to attend the opening and take part in festivities.
For the last ten years or so, the area in question was an abandoned industrial park, which Gothenburg transformed into a green patch in the middle of the city.
City authorities pointed out that residents made this change possible with their participation and involvement in all stages of the project.
Besides making the area greener, Gothenburg built a public bath that boasts pools with salt and fresh water, noting that the fresh water pool can be heated.
More than 50 trees from other construction sites have been moved to the park, some of which are roughly 50 years old, with city authorities pointing out that the move lowered costs and will make the park look more mature.
The park is Gothenburg’s response to residents’ calls for more greenery in the city centre and access to a public bath. It was planned through dialogue with the residents and will be open to visitors free of charge.
During the four-day opening celebration, visitors will have an opportunity to try yoga, fishing, canoeing, sailing, dancing and more, with city authorities noting that food and drinks will be available at three food trucks.
