Gothenburg launches sustainable art and recreation project
Gothenburg has launched a sustainable art and recreation project in Renström Park as part of its move towards sustainability.
Headed by Mayor of Gothenburg Axel Josefson, city authorities noted that wooden sculptures will be installed in children’s play areas in the park.
Gothenburg noted that the sculptures are biodegradable, making them the first such park furniture in the city.
Artists Kristian Gade Andersen and Madelene Svensson created the sculptures inspired by nature, including large carrots and strawberries for children to climb and play with.
The sculptures reflect the area’s connection with cultivation and farming as well as local fauna, with city authorities pointing out that birdhouses will be installed in the area to promote biodiversity.
The wood used to create the park furniture came from the Gothenburg area, which is in line with the city’s sustainability approach.
Project manager Johanna Axelsson pointed out that use of biodegradable park furniture allows nature to reclaim the area in about 20 years unless city authorities decide to renew it.
She noted that the play area will not have traditional furniture such as sandboxes and swings, but will let children’s imagination determine the function of sculptures, which opens doors to more challenging and creative play.
City authorities pointed out that the play area will blend in with its surroundings and invite further play in nature, which will benefit children’s development. The project is to be completed in the spring.
