Gothenburg plans to use treated wastewater in industry
Gothenburg has announced plans to use treated wastewater for industrial purposes with the aim of saving resources.
Headed by Mayor of Gothenburg Axel Josefson, city authorities pointed out that the move is environmentally friendly and resource-efficient.
According to plans, the future batter plant at Hisingen will use purified wastewater for cooling, which will lower consumption of drinking water.
The supply line to the battery factory will include a tapping point, which will make it possible to use the water for other purposes in addition to cooling equipment at the factory.
City authorities pointed out that roughly 0.5% of treated wastewater is reused in Europe, noting that the water can be used safely to water plants, among other.
By using treated wastewater, areas consume less drinking water, which lowers consumption of energy and chemicals needed to make water safe for drinking.
According to Gothenburg authorities, the city could offer treated wastewater for other industrial purposes or use it to clean streets, among other.
City authorities pointed out that Gothenburg is the first city in Sweden to use treated wastewater on a large scale and noted that several municipalities are offering such water to companies, stressing that water does not have to be as purified for industrial purposes as it does for human consumption.
