Frankfurt opens new energy efficient hospital
Frankfurt has opened the first energy efficient hospital with a passive house certificate, stressing that the move presents “a quantum leap” in healthcare.
Under Lord Mayor of Frankfurt Peter Feldmann, city authorities pointed out that the project is future-oriented and focused on sustainability.
The hospital was completed two weeks ahead of schedule and will open for patient care on 4 February, employing approximately 1,600 staff.
Hessian Minister of Health and Social Affairs Kai Klose and Frankfurt councillor for mobility and health Stefan Majer attended the opening with hospital management and representatives of construction companies that built the hospital.
“With this new building, the population of the region will have a state-of-the-art hospital with the best care options,” Klose stressed and added that the state financed the project with nearly EUR 55 million.
He pointed out that hospitals consume a lot of energy, “which is why it is all the more important to focus on energy efficiency and sustainability” when we build them.
Majer added that “the corona pandemic has once again made it abundantly clear that maximum care hospitals are genuine services of general interest… and that these belong in public hands.”
He noted that the hospital is Frankfurt’s largest construction project in recent decades and concluded that he is happy to see it completed.
