Frankfurt waste disposal company buys first hydrogen-powered bin lorry

Frankfurt’s waste management and disposal company FES is in the process of acquiring its first hydrogen-powered bin lorry.

City authorities headed by Acting Mayor of Frankfurt Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg pointed out that the company placed the order before Christmas 2022, with delivery expected in autumn this year.

Frankfurt’s councillor for the environment and FES Supervisory Board chair Rosemarie Heilig pointed out “in order to achieve climate neutrality, we have to replace fossil fuels with emission-free and green drives.”

She stressed that this goes for public and private sectors and concluded that FES is leading by example.

FES managing director Dirk Remmert expressed belief that hydrogen will be one of the clean fuels that will be used in waste collection vehicles in the future.

“This high-quality vehicle is based on the latest technology, gives us the opportunity to gain experience and complements our offensive in the field of alternative drives,” he concluded.

Frankfurt has only three hydrogen filling stations as the fuel is not widely used due to high cost of production and storage issues. The new truck will refuel at one of the existing stations and at the waste processing plant.

FES pointed out that it is expanding its fleet with environmentally friendly vehicles, noting that it expects Daimler Truck to start delivering eight fully electric bin lorries in April this year.

The company noted that the German government subsidises purchase of environmentally friendly waste collection vehicles, with the Ministry of Transport covering 90% of additional costs compared to conventional diesel vehicles.
