The Dutch royal couple, His Majesty Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands, and Her Majesty Máxima, Queen of the Netherlands paid a visit to the Austrian capital Vienna.

During the state visit, the royal couple met with Austria’s President Alexander Van der Bellen, Austria’s Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, as well as Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig.

Mayor Ludwig stated on social media: ‘’From 1714 to 1795, the Austrian Netherlands were part of the Austrian Habsburg dynasty – so we also have a long common historical tradition.’’

The mayor of the Austrian capital also emphasized that Vienna and Amsterdam maintain very close relations even today.

‘’Today, for example, Vienna and Amsterdam cooperate very successfully – especially in the social field – at the level of the EUROCITIES city network. The long-standing close cooperation is also reflected in the numerous delegation visits from the Netherlands. Specifically, a total of 242 delegation participants have visited Vienna since 2015,’’ mayor Ludwig stated.

He also noted that the successful cooperation between the two cities is especially evident in fields such as urban development, waste management and social affairs and human rights.

Vienna and Amsterdam share a vision for a more sustainable future, which is why both cities have taken numerous steps in this direction in recents years. Both cities understand the necessity of taking the initiative in areas pertaining to sustainability and the battle against climate change, which has grown to be one of the biggest challenges we are faced with.

Mayor Ludwig added that it was important to emphasize The Netherlands’ strong support for Vienna following the terrorist attack in 2020.

‘’At that time, the Netherlands donated 10,000 tulip bulbs to the city of Vienna – a particularly moving sign of compassion. These were then planted together with Ambassador Aldrik Gierveld at the foot of the Ruprechtsstiege in memory of the victims of the attack,’’ Mayor Ludwig stated.
