Vienna invites its residents to pitch green projects

Vienna is inviting residents to pitch green projects for Mariahilf, Währing and Floridsdorf districts as part of the pilot project that has entered its second year.

Headed by Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig, city authorities pointed out that residents can participate in the decision-making process directly and get their green ideas and projects off the ground with the help of local authorities.

Vienna allocated EUR 6 million for the pilot project in 2023, pointing out that each district’s implementation budget stands at roughly EUR 20 per district resident.

Councillor for climate Jürgen Czernohorszky pointed out “the Vienna climate team focuses on working together with the people of Vienna, district representatives and the city’s experts.”

“In 2022 we reached many people who had not yet had any experience of participation,” he reminded and concluded “we want to continue on this path with the 3 new districts.”

Residents are invited to submit their ideas online or by post, with city authorities noting that the ideas will then be evaluated by experts and developed into projects through workshops with authors and other interested parties.

In the final stage of the project, citizen juries from the districts in question will decide which projects will be implemented there.

In the first year of the pilot project, residents submitted more than 1,000 ideas of which 102 were developed into projects and 19 selected for implementation in the coming years.
