Vienna announced the launch of a new joint funding programme for promotion of environmentally friendly mobility.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig pointed out that the city launched the programme in cooperation with the Vienna Chamber of Commerce.

Under the programme worth EUR 7 million, Vienna will support the transition away from internal combustion vehicles in the city’s taxi fleet, with city authorities reminding that Vienna will ban non-electric taxis in 2025.

City councillor Peter Hanke pointed out that “Vienna is a city of short distances and taxis are an important supplement to public transport.”

He noted that city authorities will decide on the details in December and predicted that the programme will be launched in January next year.

“Since we are also concerned with the topic of climate protection in the city and motorized traffic in particular is one of the largest sources of CO2 in Vienna, we are taking an important step towards switching to environmentally friendly with the new e-taxi subsidy,” Hanke concluded.

The Vienna Chamber of Commerce noted that the transition towards electric vehicles presents a major challenge for many companies and stressed that the new programme will help them in an effective and targeted manner.

Subsidies will be capped at EUR 10,000 per taxi, with 15 vehicles eligible per company. Vienna authorities invited companies to submit their applications from 1 January next year.
