Vienna has launched the WohnBAUM housing programme aimed at building sustainable living spaces.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig stressed that Vienna is breaking new ground in sustainability and fulfilling its role as an international pioneer in social housing.

Vienna pointed out that the programme focuses on innovative use of renewable and recyclable materials, stressing that apartments will be built from wood and wood-hybrid construction in the first of three phases of WohnBAUM.

First apartments are to be completed in 2025, with city authorities pointing out that the goal of the programme is to build affordable housing that is environmentally friendly and sustainable, but still urban.

In the first phase of the programme, 39 subsidised rental apartments will be built as well as 41 affordable SMART apartments. The project employs flexible timber construction and boasts a very high degree of prefabrication to ensure quick and low-noise construction.

The area in question is adjacent to a forest and meadows, with city authorities pointing out that residents will have access to urban gardening, playgrounds for children and private gardens.

New buildings will boast solar panels on the roof and heat pumps to improve energy efficiency and minimise negative effects on the environment. A material database will record all data on new buildings and facilitate reuse of materials.
