Vilnius to build 18 storage and charging facilities for bicycles and scooters

Vilnius has announced plans to build the first 18 facilities for storing and charging bicycles and scooters.

Headed by Mayor of Vilnius Remigijus Šimašius, city authorities noted that the facilities will be built in four districts by the end of July this year.

Each facility will have room for 16 bicycles and 2 scooters, will be available to residents at all times and will be locked automatically. City authorities noted that residents will be able to unlock the storage facilities by phone.

Residents will be able to store, recharge and repair their bicycles at the facilities, which will be equipped with tools for repair and maintenance.

Deputy Mayor Tomas Gulbinas pointed out that residents are taking up cycling, stressing the importance of expanding cycling infrastructure.

He noted that storage for more than 300 bicycles and scooters will be completed this summer and concluded that work on the project has started.

City authorities reminded that residents chose the locations for the storage facilities, which will be in yards and streets with low traffic and conveniently accessible.

UAB Šmikis construction company is to build the storage facilities and JUDU public transport company will be responsible for their operation and maintenance. Vilnius concluded that first facilities will be built soon and reiterated that the project will be completed by the end of July.
