Riga invites residents to propose urban development plans

Riga has invited residents to propose urban development plans for the historical city centre.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis reminded that the city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Riga wants to transform the city centre into a viable urban environment that meets the requirements of modern society, noting that proposals from all residents are welcome.

Interested parties can submit their ideas by 3 March, with city authorities stressing that planners want to know what is needed in the city centre from the perspective of residents.

Riga noted that a form for submitting proposals is available online and added that an analysis of submitted proposals will help city authorities to determine the direction of development.

The city council decided to draw up a development plan for the historical city centre in December last year, stressing the importance of protecting the UNESCO World Heritage Site while modernising the area.

The new plan will take into consideration modern mobility needs and available technologies as well as organisation of public spaces more broadly, and will take into account all ideas highlighted in public, professional and political discussions.

City authorities pointed out that the plan will be the main long-term development plan for the area and concluded that more information is available online.
