Riga plants more than 200 trees in 2022 with plans to preserve them for years
Riga continues to make its streets greener and has planted more than 200 trees this year in different neighbourhoods. Headed by Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis, city authorities pointed out that different species were planted this year, including oaks, lindens, maples, chestnuts, poplars, apples and ash trees.
The department of housing and environment planted more than 150 trees in several neighbourhoods and the department of transport planted more than 50 trees as part of road maintenance projects.
Selīna Vancāne, head of housing and environment at Riga City Council, stressed that the city is becoming greener, which means that it is becoming healthier.
She added that greenery in the city reduces noise and pollution as well as heat island effects, improves quality of life and makes Riga more enjoyable for everyone. “Tree planting and greening of the city will continue for years to come,” she concluded.
City authorities pointed out that tree species are chosen to best suit the locations where they are planted, which increases their effectiveness as well as promotes biodiversity.
After planting, trees are supervised for at least ten years, with a lot of attention paid to watering and fertilising in the first years after planting.
Crowns are trimmed and formed biennially, while specialists inspect the trees several times each year to evaluate their development and make adjustments as needed.
