Mārtiņš Staķis is transforming Riga by implementing a bunch of worthwhile plans
Mārtiņš Staķis is a Latvian politician and businessman who has been serving as mayor of Riga since 2020. He is the son of Dagnija Staķe who is the former Minister of Regional Development and Local Governments of Latvia.
Mayor of Riga is one of the founders and members of the choir Pa Saulei as well as a board member of the St. Gertrude Old Church in Riga, and one of the authors behind the Ū vitamīns initiative which aims to provide free drinking water in cafes, restaurants and other public places.
As mayor of Riga, one of Staķis’ top priorities are the city’s infrastructure renewal and also improving the urban environment.
Under his mayoral term, the city of Riga has agreed on Action Plan for Riga City. This is the city’s program which sets some targets for 2025, and it operates in different areas including governance, education, culture, mobility and infrastructure, urban environment, environmental protection, housing, social inclusion, economy and entrepreneurship.
Furthermore, Mārtiņš Staķis established a new centralized agency in Riga to improve digital services and the use of data. This will help the city in its digital transformation journey.
Mayor of Riga also puts decarbonization and climate neutrality as one of his main goals. He has started projects which bring more green areas to the city. He is also building more cycling lanes and, this way, motivates people to switch to the alternative and green transport options.
Staķis has also gained many investments in modern infrastructure which prioritizes public transport and implements various micro-mobility solutions. Now, he is working on improvements for energy efficiency of buildings as well as bio-waste management systems.
Mayor Staķis has also started the Riga Investment Agency, which deals directly with the successful “landing” of investments in the city, and it provides informative, practical, and service support.
