Vienna got awarded for its outstanding achievements
The city of Vienna, led by mayor Michael Ludwig, has been awarded with the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2020, a biennial international award that honors outstanding achievements and contributions to the creation of livable, vibrant, and sustainable urban communities around the world.
According to the jury, Vienna was chosen as the winner because of “reinventing itself for success in the 21st century without losing its distinctive identity as a capital of culture, music and history”. Furthermore, Vienna has taken on a leading role in addressing the global challenges of climate change and sustaining the highest quality of life for its inhabitants.
Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig stated: “We will continue on our consistent path of high quality of life for everyone through social and technical innovation in all areas, while maximising conservation of resources and thus resume to be a reliable partner for others,”
Some of the most important steps that Vienna has been taking are the Urban Development Plan of Vienna which has the goal of creating more open and green spaces to reduce the “Urban heat island effect”, the condition when urban areas become hotter than the rural ones.
Dr Cheong Koon Hean, Chairman of the prize nominating committee, said: “Even as the world faces a climate emergency, Vienna is an exemplar of responsible environmental stewardship for its region.”
