The new Scientific Imaginary in Porto Vecchio
The Mayor of Trieste Roberto Dipiazza attended a short ceremony of “handing over the keys” of Immaginario Scientifico, a new Museum of the Scientific Imaginary that occupies about 3,000 square meters, spread over two floors, of the central section of Warehouse 26 of the Old Port of Trieste, owned by the Municipality of Trieste.
In this first phase of opening to the public, it will be possible to visit the approximately 1,000 square meters located on the ground floor. The spaces on the second floor will be made available in the spring of 2021, at the end of the works that are still involving Warehouse 26 and the surrounding areas.
The new Museum is the result of an articulated project that envisages the reuse of Porto Vecchio, Old Port of Trieste owned by the Municipality of Trieste, the enhancement of the “historic” collection of the Museum, and above all of an impressive path for the creation of new contents and new multimedia, immersive and engaging methods of fruition and narration of the science and the entrepreneurial excellence of innovation. This unique, innovative and demonstrative Museum is conceived with the aim of thrilling, surprising, stimulating action, encouraging visitors of all ages and backgrounds: children, adults, “men of science”, simply curious and passionate visitors.
“It is a great satisfaction to inaugurate this new scientific imagination in Porto Vecchio” underlined the Mayor Roberto Dipiazza. “Porto Vecchio will be the ‘center’ of all museums.”
The Imaginario Scientifico Science Center is an interactive and experimental science museum that aims to promote and disseminate scientific and technological culture. Thanks to original exhibition techniques and innovative teaching animation methodologies, it belongs to the category of the so-called “new generation museums”, or rather the “science centers” of the Anglo-Saxon school, which revolutionize the typical traditional museum. From a place dedicated to the conservation and display of finds and old tools, the museum is transformed into a living place where the visitor interacts with the objects present and with the museum environments.
The Museum was born with the active partnership of scientific realities (AREA Science Park, ELETTRA, ICGEB, ICTP, INAF, INFN, OGS, SISSA, TWAS, and the University of Trieste) and leading companies (ACEGAS APS AMGA HERA group, ILLY, SIAD, SAIPEM, ESTECO, and SISSA MEDIALAB), each of which has worked side by side with the Scientific Imaginary for the conception, development, and realization of the contents of Science and Technology that the exhibition spaces illustrate and is committed to continuing this collaboration in the future, to generate an “open” museum, in continuous evolution. The Museum has also developed thanks to the support of the Casali Foundation, the CRTrieste Foundation, and the Pittini Foundation The support of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Municipality of Trieste and the Ministry of University and Research was decisive.
