Stockholm explores boosting water public transport with electric ‘flying’ ferry
Cities are frequently thought of as centers of innovation and creativity, as well as places where different players join together to present creative solutions to enhance the quality of life for their residents.
Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, frequently ranks quite well in terms of innovations and regularly makes global headlines for their top-tier innovative solutions. This is why both Sweden and Stockholm are considered global powerhouses of innovations.
As cities look to become more environmentally-friendly and sustainable, some of them are exploring new means of transportation. Euronews recently reported that the fastest electric ship in the world will soon begin to cruise the archipelago surrounding Stockholm in an effort to make public transportation by water more appealing.
Stockholm is located on fourteen islands, along the shores of the archipelago, and at the confluence of Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. The city’s center sits practically on the water, providing an enormous opportunity for the Swedish capital to experiment with novel modes of transportation.
With a speed of 30 knots, the Candela P-12 Shuttle is expected to start service in the capital of Sweden the following year. According to its creators, the ship is also the most energy-efficient electric ship ever built.
It is hoped that this innovative mode of transportation will make city maritime public transportation more alluring than trains, buses, and vehicles. Because of how they are made, used, and disposed of in the end, vehicles have a significant negative environmental impact.
The new electric ship will start a nine-month testing period in 2023, and if it lives up to the lofty expectations set for it, it may eventually replace the city’s fleet of more than 70 diesel-powered vehicles. (photo credit: visit stockholm)
