Stockholm celebrates Earth hour with green pledge and lights out

Stockholm is to mark the Earth Hour on 25 March to show its commitment to the green push and efforts to address climate change.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Stockholm Karin Wanngård stressed the importance of reflecting on what individuals and local authorities can do to reduce their impact on the environment.

They added that cities play an important role in the transition towards sustainable development and stressed that it Stockholm is determined to be a leader in the push to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Stockholm reaffirmed its commitment to achieve UN’s 17 sustainability goals by 2030 and announced plans to serve as a role model for other cities in this regard.

As part of efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions, Stockholm will switch off several public buildings including the City Hall and the House of Culture, among other, as well as municipal offices where possible.

City authorities stressed that Stockholm must focus on environmental efforts in order to achieve climate goals and become more sustainable.

Stockholm reminded that it became the first EU Green Capital in 2010 thanks to its dedication to environmental protection and years of successful work in this area.

Earth Hour is a World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) initiative for promotion of sustainable management of resources and transition towards renewable sources of energy.
