Riga: buildings renovation projects are finished for 2021

News

In this time of modernisation and alternative styles in architecture, it is important not to forget the older buildings. Renovation is a key part in order to enhance existing buildings and continue their historical significance and story. This is why renovation process done in Riga is so important.

During 2021, the City Council, mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis and the company Rīgas namu pārvaldnieks (RNP) started this project. Four buildings have been finished for now.

Each building has undergone significant changes, the prime one being the new facade and its lighting. This was done in accordance with surrounding buildings in order to aesthetically fit in the neighbourhood.

Around half of the original woodwork was able to be preserved. This was important because those windows and doors had been part of the wider historical trends, back when this structure was constructed.

To accommodate and prolong the new facades on all four buildings, a small texture of graphite plaster was put. Many original architectural details were preserved, such as cornices, decorative strips, profiled wooden poles and bays of windows.

Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis is the prime supporter of this project. He is convinced that the preservation of cultural and historical heritage will greatly help and benefit the city. Furthermore, it will inspire the privately owned buildings to be renovated and enhanced in order to keep up with this trend.

Mayor Staķis stated: “My only wish is that more and more residents of Riga have such houses and homes”.

For the opening of the last building, an installation “Key of Light” has been implemented on the facade of the building.

When this project started, noone was aware this  would be such a success. Thanks to the collaboration between city administration and RNP, the Art Nouveau building also got renovated earlier this year. It represents one of the most important buildings for its cultural heritage.

Hopefully, this project will be continued next year: it is a prime example of how cultural and historical sites should be managed, in order to preserve their beauty and story. (photo credit: Publicitātes foto/Delfi.lv)
