Murcia turns streets into dancing stages for International Flamenco Day
Murcia announced the Week of Flamenco to start on 16 November, the International Flamenco Day. Headed by Mayor of Murcia José Antonio Serrano Martínez, city authorities pointed out that the event will turn the streets and squares of Murcia into stages to promote flamenco.
The Dance Conservatory of Murcia and the city’s department of culture proposed the project, with Councillor for Culture Pedro José García Rex stressing that it will promote all aspects of flamenco as an art form.
“Flamenco has crossed borders and enchanted people from all over the world and we are sure that with this proposal Murcians, and also those who visit us, will enjoy the scheduled activities,” he concluded.
Performances will take place at five locations on the first day of the event, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
City authorities reminded that UNESCO included flamenco in its list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2010 and added that November is a special month for promotion of flamenco.
As part of planned activities, professionals will teach attendants to dance and sing, and flamenco students will show what they learned in previous days. Musicians will perform on squares to encourage passers-by to join the programme.
Murcia authorities pointed out that Andalusia is the birthplace of flamenco and reiterated that the art form has crossed borders and spread to all parts of the world.
