Murcia to adhere to European Circular Cities Declaration
The Murcia City Council, through the Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government, led by Mercedes Bernabé, is immersed in the development of the Circular Economy Strategy, a document aligned with the current plans for Adaptation and Mitigation of Climate Change, as well as with the Urban Agenda 2030.
In this way, within the framework of these works, Murcia has become, together with Seville, one of the only two Spanish cities to adhere to the declaration of Circular Cities, a commitment to continue advancing on the path towards transition to a circular and sustainable economy.
It is a declaration signed by a group of 35 cities from different countries that will allow European local and regional governments to communicate interventions in the circular economy, giving them support and dissemination, providing a shared vision of the circular city and establishing a network of committed organizations with sustainability, sharing their experiences, challenges and successes.
Some of these cities come from countries such as Albania, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Norway, Slovenia and Sweden.
“Belonging to this group of cities is a recognition of the important effort that the Murcia City Council is making in the area of Circular Economy, not only in the field of urban waste recycling and use of wastewater, but also through its actions of innovation and development, promoting new business opportunities, such as the Valuewaste, Cityloops and Hoops projects “, highlighted the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta.
Recognition from the Circular Economy Diagnosis
The international organization ICLE-Local Governments for Sustainability, invited Murcia City Council to sign the declaration after the presentation of the Circular Economy diagnosis, whose conclusions show that Murcia is moving towards sustainability in terms of water, energy and waste.
“We are one of the European cities that is most concerned about implementing circular economy initiatives and increasing its level of circularity. The first diagnosis carried out in this regard highlights the initiatives that are being carried out, but also the predisposition on the transition to local commerce or the consumption of domestic products, among other factors”, Mercedes Bernabé highlighted.
