Murcia launches mobility project financed through EU funds
Murcia has launched a mobility project that includes expansion of pedestrian areas and planting of new trees, and will be financed through EU funds.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Murcia José Antonio Serrano Martínez noted that work on Constitución Avenue started, with bus and bike lanes to be separated.
The mobility project aims to build 44 kilometres of new bike lanes and 43 kilometres of new bus lanes.
Besides making Murcia greener, the planting of new trees will help to reduce noise and pollution levels, making the city a healthier and more enjoyable place to live.
The project will also make public transport more efficient and improve safety of cyclists by segregating bike lanes from the rest of the traffic.
City authorities plan to install benches in the shades of newly planted trees, widen sidewalks and plant shrubs along the avenue.
As part of the project, some infrastructure under paved surfaces will be replaced and new bus stops will be constructed.
Murcia authorities stressed that the project will have positive environmental impact as the addition of new trees and shrubs will improve air quality and reduce the heat island effect.
In addition, the project will improve traffic safety and reliability of public transport, and improve the pedestrian experience.
