Mayor Moedas wants everyone to feel at home in Lisbon
Lisbon exudes a strong historical and cultural vibe, and it is well-known around the world for its charming architecture. However, more recently, Lisbon has also been establishing a reputation as a prime location for digital entrepreneurs. Led by Carlos Moedas, who was elected as mayor in October 2021, the city keeps on growing. The areas on which mayor Moedas is primarily focused include tourism redevelopment, energetic transition, sustainable mobility and innovations.
Prior to becoming mayor of Lisbon, Moedas served as European Commissioner for Research, Science, and Innovation under President Jean-Claude Juncker from 2014 to 2019. Between 2011 and 2014, he was Secretary of State in Portugal’s XIX Constitutional Government. To fulfill his vision for the Portuguese capital, mayor Moedas is counting on every Lisbon resident. He is committed to strengthening the city’s strong inclusive and accepting image. Mayor Moedas wants to ensure that all Lisbon residents can feel at home in this city – regardless of their background, age, occupation, or personal story.
The new mayor of Lisbon’s first priorities are to involve people in decision-making, to provide free transportation passes to the city’s young and elderly, and to develop access to a health plan for all residents over the age of 65. Carlos Moedas has laid out several plans for the city’s future since his election as mayor of Lisbon. For example, Lisboa Solar is part of a larger strategy known as the Great Options 2022-2026 Plan or GOP. The primary goal of the Lisbon Solar project is to promote electricity production for self-consumption. It entails implementing these policies in both the public and private sectors. The general objective is to embrace the solar potential of the city.
In addition to these actions, mayor of Lisbon Carlos Moedas announced a plan to renew the city’s public lighting network. Remote management, flow regulation, and, most importantly, the replacement of old luminaires with new LED technology will be part of this redevelopment. If all of this is achieved, the Portuguese capital could truly become one of the role models in Europe regarding climate protection and sustainability. There are also plans to expand electric vehicle charging station networks to further promote these actions. Fast and ultra-fast charging stations, as well as charging hubs for privately owned electric vehicles, will be included.
Furthermore, mayor Moedas also aims to further develop Lisbon as a popular weekend and holiday destination. This will be accomplished through a variety of investments that will strengthen infrastructure, services, and attractions throughout the city. (photo credit: wikimedia)
