Lyon promotes cycling to school
The inaugural edition of the “To school, I go by bike” challenge was recently held in Lyon, France, with the goal of raising awareness among school children and their families about active means of transportation and how they may be used in daily life.
Mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet recently stated on social media: ‘’This morning, the little residents of Lyon went to school by bike! With the aim of raising awareness among children and parents about active means of transport and teaching our little ones to ride in the city, this challenge was made possible thanks to a partnership between the Maison du Vélo, teachers, the City of Lyon and, of course, the parents.’’
With this innovative campaign, young people from Lyon were encouraged to ride their bicycles, balancing bikes, or scooters to school. The action drew great interest from parents and young people, as some 3 500 kindergarten and primary school pupils participated in this initiative.
‘’We are absolutely delighted to see the success of this first edition. The challenge was met by more than 3,500 students from Lyon. Congratulations!”, mayor of Lyon further stated.
Since its creation in 2004, the goal of the Maison du Vélo Lyon has been to encourage and assist citizens of France’s third largest city to embrace cycling and walking as a mode of transportation.
Walking, cycling, and other human-powered modes of transportation are all considered active transportation. Active transportation alternatives can help cities become more accessible, safe, inclusive, and ecologically friendly. Moreover, cycling has been proved in numerous studies to be incredibly beneficial to children’s physical and mental health. (photo credit: bearfotos/Freepik)
