Lyon regulates use of air conditioning in commercial establishments
Heat waves hit Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia in June and July 2022 when temperatures in numerous locations soared beyond 40 degrees Celsius.
France was similarly impacted by a period of exceptionally hot weather in June and July this year.
In wake of extreme heat, the French city of Lyon will regulate the use of air conditioning systems in commercial establishments, Tribune de Lyon reported.
In accordance with a decree signed by Mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet, businesses are not permitted to leave their doors open while their air conditioner is running. On Wednesday, July 20, the new rule went into effect.
Mayor Doucet stated on social media: ‘’While France and particularly Lyon are experiencing increasingly frequent and long heat waves, I have decided to issue a decree to regulate the use of air conditioning in the city’s stores.’’
‘’This is a common sense decision for the good of the planet and therefore for the good of all of us. In a context where temperatures are rising and energy prices are increasing, we are launching a call to mobilize for more eco-sufficiency,’’ he continued.
Scientists caution that heat waves will occur earlier than usual owing to climate change and will be even more common than before, at a time when European cities are already experiencing extreme heat.
Furthermore, the likelihood of other forms of disasters also rises with extreme temperatures. (photo credit: Gerd Altmann/Pixabay)
