Lyon Kennedy block project focuses on reducing emissions and heat islands

Lyon presented the Kennedy block urban project in October, pointing out that it should be completed in 2026.

Mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet noted that the project is worth roughly EUR 60 million and stressed “this will be the major operation of our mandate… the biggest in terms of investment.”

The project includes construction of a new school complex, dance studios and a swimming pool, with city authorities stressing that it will focus on environmental issues including reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and lower use of fossil fuels.

The new school complex will have approximately 600 m2 of solar panels, 470 m2 of green roof and a connection to the district heating network, which will help it to achieve high environmental standards.

The planned greening of the courtyard will help to limit heat islands and offer a place to study and come in contact with nature.

The planned dance studios will provide a space for professionals to produce and create. The building will be connected to the district heating network and boast 100 m2 of solar panels as well as 700 m2 of green roof.

The two studios will be able to accommodate 100 and 40 people, respectively, and the building that will house them will also have a modular room with 450 seats, sanitary areas, a bar and more.

City authorities pointed out that special care will be given to acoustics to isolate the spaces better and concluded that dancers will have everything they need to flourish.
