How Lyon is boosting biodiversity and beautifying the city with wildflowers
Lyon has launched an initiative aimed at maintaining biodiversity and making the city greener.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet pointed out that nearly 10,000 packets of seeds will be distributed to the residents as part of the project.
The move will help residents to make their gardens and balconies as well as streets and unmaintained spaces greener, with city authorities noting that residents can also submit requests for planting to Lyon Nature service.
The seed mixture in packages includes wild species and those adapted to the local climate, with Lyon stressing that planting these species will benefit pollinators.
Species in the mix include cowcockle, common corncockle, garland chrysanthemum, common poppy, field clover and Persian speedwell. Residents should sow the seeds before mid-May for best results.
City authorities pointed out that basic instructions are available on the seed packets and added that more detailed information is available online, of Lyon’s YouTube channel.
Lyon called on residents to use the planting season to make their surroundings greener and pointed out that the seeds can be sown in planters as well, stressing that more plants will improve air quality and make the city more attractive and enjoyable.
City authorities invited residents to take part in more than 70 activities that Lyon offers to enjoy natural areas including parks and gardens.
