Hanover is helping low-income households to purchase energy-efficient refrigerators and freezers. Mayor of Hanover Belit Onay pointed out that replacing old and inefficient refrigerators helps to lower energy bills as well as protects the climate.

“Especially in view of the massive increase in electricity prices and the associated financial problems, it is important that households are supported in reducing energy costs,” he concluded.

As part of the programme, Hannover will subsidise the purchase of new refrigerators with EUR 100, which will come on top of the 100 provided for this purpose through the national programme launched by the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

Hanover authorities pointed out that old refrigerators are often some of the largest power consumers in households, stressing that newer refrigerators require roughly 40% less energy.

As part of Hannover’s broader power-saving efforts, the city is offering advice as well as modernisation worth up to EUR 70 per household.

Under the programme, experts help households to determine how to improve energy efficiency and install energy-saving items worth up to EUR 70, including LED lighting and water flow limiters, among other. In addition, the experts advise households on ways to save energy. The programme is aimed at households with low income.

The national programme is co-financed by Caritas and energy and climate protection agencies, with additional funds provided in the Hanover region by local government units.
