Mayor of Hannover Belit Onay has announced the launch of a new mobility project in the German city which is meant to significantly improve the residents’ quality of life.

Mayor Onay stated on social media: ‘’Together with Region Hannover, we are planning to further expand the Park + Ride and Bike + Ride facilities in the city and surrounding area. Currently, 3,300 new parking spaces for cars and around 5,500 for bikes are planned.’’

The park+ride system refers to parking spaces which also offer public transportation possibilities. It allows people to leave their cars and switch to one of the public transportation means for the rest of their journey, which has numerous benefits for urban areas.

‘’A good P+R service reduces traffic in the city centre and thus enhances the quality of life and the quality of the stay, especially if it is combined with an upgrade of the urban spaces,’’ mayor Onay further stated.

According to Burgwedel Aktuell, four out of five employees in the surrounding municipalities of the Hanover region do not work in the city or municipality in which they live. In addition, there are around 200,000 people from the neighbouring districts who have to reach their job or educational centres in and around Hanover every day.

‘’When there are fewer cars on the road, everyone benefits: residents, because their neighbourhoods are not blocked by parking lots; the environment, because fewer gases are released into the air; and commuters, because they arrive at their destinations much more relaxed, without traffic jams and the search for a parking space,’’ mayor of Hannover Belit Onay stated. ‘’We are therefore also investing in climate-friendly mobility in the Hannover Region,’’ he concluded.
